Welcome. I’m a freelance web designer and developer based in Horsham, West Sussex, with a track record of creating and maintaining a series of successful small business websites.

I can provide you with a modern, attractive, well-structured and mobile-friendly website to promote your products or services. My approach is to focus on communicating your message clearly and effectively rather than on pointless gimmicks. Also, issues such as performance and SEO will be taken into account from the start, rather than left to someone else to deal with later.

See some websites I have created below.

When I qualified as a web developer, most websites were manually coded. These days I use WordPress, which facilitates production and maintenance, and can also allow you to do limited updates on your site yourself, if you so wish. My coding skills mean that I am able to carry out customizations to WordPress themes and templates which may be needed, as well as changes to the look and design.

Website Maintenance

As well as creating new websites, I can update existing ones with new content, or carry out overhauls to improve performance or visibility in search engines (see below). I can also assist with other related services such as moving a website to a new hosting provider, and recommending and setting up new domains.

Using a search engine

Search Engine Optimization

If you want your website to rank higher in search results, what is loosely termed SEO can help.

The more traditional aspect of SEO involves tweaking the website content. Although this can still help, it’s worth bearing in mind the limitations of this approach. Google now does a very good job of assessing the quality of web content  – gone are the days of poor content ranking well through crude or manipulative techniques. So the first requirement is having useful and engaging content, and presenting it well, using clear and natural language.

Another important part of SEO involves ensuring that technical aspects of the site are up to scratch. There are a large number of factors to consider, none of which by itself is likely to make a huge difference. But that’s not to say they’re not worth worrying about – as they say, every little helps.

Website Technical Audits / Technical SEO

I can carry out thorough technical audits on your website and provide recommendations on or fix any issues I find. These can include

  • optimisation of assets such as images and fonts
  • page and site structure
  • site speed and the issues that affect it
  • mobile-friendliness
  • general usability
  • SSL certificates and HTTP/2 and HTTP/3

With Google’s recent focus on what they call Core Web Vitals, site speed and usability are going to be increasingly important for ranking in search results.

I can also add structured data to your site, or make any existing generic data more specific to your site’s content. This will help search engines to understand its purpose and can enhance its presence in search results.

Google Business and Local SEO

I can assist with setting up and optimizing a Google Business listing. These are what appear in the local search results list, and can be a very effective way for businesses offering services within a particular area to reach potential local customers.

How high up this list you appear is partly determined by what Google assesses as the relevance and quality of your website.

More generally, there are other online locations where it’s worthwhile for a local business to appear, such as Bing Places, which I can also help with.

If you’d like some help with setting up a new website or maintaining an existing one, feel free to get in touch.
